Trail News:
None

Nearest City: Valley View

Directions: From Denton take I35 North. When you pass through Sanger don't take the FM455 exit that says "Lake Ray Roberts and State Park." Continue north past Sanger for about another 5 miles until you come to "Lone Oak Road, FM 3002, exit #483". Take 3002 east 7 miles. You will cross over part of the lake, do not turn into the "Pecan Creek Access Area" which is on the east side of the bridge you will cross. After you cross the lake continue on until you come to Johnson Branch entrance on your right (south).

From Frisco take FM289 (Preston) north to Celina. In Celina take FM455 west to Pilot Point. From Polit Point take Highway 377 north to Tioga. Just north of Tioga take FM922 west to Mountain Springs. In Mountain Springs head south on FM372. When the road splits take the right fork onto FM3002. Shortly after the split Johnson Branch will be on your left (south).

Enter the park. Trail head is at Dogwood Canyon which is the first campground you come to and is clearly marked. Once in the parking lot look for the little wooden kiosk in the north east corner of the parking lot to find the somewhat hidden entrance to the trail.

Description: The trail curves through trees up and down wooded hillsides creating plenty of elevation changes with approximately 760 ft of climbing per lap. The expert section of the trail is marked in red on the map and is quite rocky with numerous short steep hills. Beginner riders might want to consider by-passing some of this area by taking the fireroads out to the beginning of the yellow trail. Maps may be available at the park office but please print your own from this web site if possible. A few "mini" maps are posted on the trail which may help as they are marked with a "You are here" arrow.

There is a $5 per person entrance fee or State Park Conservation Passport to get into the park. Once you have entered the park look for Dogwood Canyon campground which will be the first parking area that you come to. As you enter the parking area the trail head will be to your right (northeast), look for small wooden kiosk with the trail map attached. Stay to the left as you do the loop clockwise. There are at this time 4 cross over trails which will allow you to do shortened laps. The various trails are marked with colored arrows indicating which section you are on.

The first three mile section of single track was first opened in May of 1999. Sections have been slowly added until the loop was completed in late fall of 2001.
