The Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association (DORBA) has announced that the 15th edition of its spring classic mountain bike race, the Richardson Bike Mart DORBA Prayer Mountain Pedal, is scheduled for Saturday May 4 at Big Cedar Wilderness Trail in Dallas.
“Last year we brought in over 400 racers from all over the State of Texas,” said Pam Jackson, president of the DORBA organization. “We are expecting an even greater number of racers as reputation of this fantastic course has spread. Thanks to hard working DORBA volunteers, this year's racers will have the opportunity to race on the new extension of beautiful Big Cedar."
The Saturday Cross-Country Mountain Bike Race is sanctioned by USA Cycling, the national governing body for competitive cycling in the country. The event also continues to be included in the 2013 Texas Cross Country Mountain Bike State Championship Series, organized by the Texas Mountain Bike Racing Association (TMBRA). Categories to be offered range from the beginner-level Category 3 races, up to Category 1 races for the elite amateurs. Adult age group breakouts for most categories are offered at 5- or 10-year intervals, while Junior (Under 18) riders race at 2-year age breaks. A showcase Pro/Elite category is held to attract the top-level off-road racing talent.
Ken “Woody” Smith of Richardson Bike Mart expressed enthusiasm about the shop’s participation in this year’s edition. “Richardson Bike Mart and DORBA have both been around for a long time and we’ve always been proud supporters of the organization.”
Juniors with some trail riding experience may participate in the USA Cycling Sanctioned races. The 10-and-under and 12-and-under races are conducted on shortened 2- and 4-mile versions of the full circuit. Other races offered for 13-14 and 15-18 year olds complete the full 8-mile loop.
The “Kids Kup” is geared to youngsters who are new to mountain biking. The format includes a 30-minute clinic. There’s also a fun race on a kid-friendly circuit that takes just a few minutes to navigate. There is no minimum age for participation in the Kids Kup.
The event features an expo area open to the public showcasing over a dozen cycling-related race sponsors, club sponsors, and affiliated cycling organizations. Spectators may attend the races and the cycling expo with no entry charge and no parking charges.
Racers who wish to participate are encouraged to pre-register online for a discounted entry fee which is available until two weeks prior to the event. Late “race-week” online registration, as well as walk-up registration will also be available. Online registration and a complete race-day schedule will also be available in mid-March on DORBA’s website (www.dorba.org
The race takes on its new “Prayer Mountain Pedal” name in honor of the location of the trailhead at the end of Prayer Mountain Lane on the campus of the Mountain Creek Church. Racers in most categories will have multiple opportunities to ascend Prayer Mountain from various directions as they make their way around the off-road course. This year’s route is also planned to be the fastest yet at Big Cedar with plenty of flow and fun sections. The actual race course layout for this year’s event will be announced in late March.
The spring classic race has been a staple on the TMBRA Texas State Championship Series Spring Calendar since 1999. DORBA’s spring classic race was first known as the “Bar-H Bash” when held at its original location near St. Jo, TX. More recently, the race had been called the DORBA Dash after relocating to its present location within the city of Dallas in 2011.
DORBA supports and maintains a trail system of more than 20 off-road cycling and multi-use trails in the city of Dallas and over a dozen surrounding communities. To support its mission of trail access and advocacy, DORBA raises funds through individual and family memberships, as well as a series of 10 USA Cycling Sanctioned bike races throughout the year. DORBA represents over 2000 members and associates who mountain bike in the DFW Metroplex area. It is the club's hardworking members, along with a number of generous local sponsors, that make it possible to further the club's mission.
The Richardson Bike Mart DORBA Prayer Mountain Pedal is the largest of DORBA’s races and serves as its primary fund raiser. Other races produced by the club include a long-running fall cross-country racing series (kicking off August 18) and a popular winter 6-hour endurance format series.
